I am writing a book for extra credit! I finished chapter one:
Charlotte
The Child Seamstress
By Samantha Parkington
Book One:
Charlotte Meets Samantha And Nellie
Charlotte sulked home after a bad day at work. She had gotten fired. It wasn’t just that day that was bad, the whole year of 1907 was bad. Charlotte had worked long hours in a shoe factory, for little pay. Her mother worked in a thread factory. She worked 60 hours a week.
And now Charlotte was about to let her mother down by telling her that she had lost her job. But it wasn’t her fault. Her boss, Mr. James, asked her to come with her. So she did. He took her to the back room. He said how he knew that she was stealing leather from the factory. Untrue. And how he knew she was stashing it until she had enough to start her own business. Untrue. So he fired her. But charlotte had done nothing wrong.
So she pushed the door of her apartment. She coughed. What was that horrible smell? She didn’t have to ask. She knew that somewhere in the apartment someone was smoking cigars. That was why some people were in there. They spent what little money they had on drugs and cigars.
When Charlotte was outside of her door, and she picked up a note that was on the ground. It read:
Went out. Be back at four.
It was four thirty. Her mother must be home. So charlotte pushed her door opened. “MOM!” She cried when she saw her mother face first on the floor. She ran over to her mom and felt her hand. Cold, Charlotte thought. Cold and lifeless. Tears welled in her eyes. She sat there and cried over her mother’s dead body for a while.
Then she got up and wiped her eyes. She walked over to the small stove and started to cook dinner.
That night charlotte couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking of her mother. Her mother was now underneath the bed they had once shared. How can mother be dead? Charlotte thought. What am I to do?
The next day charlotte pretended her mother had just died. She screamed a loud ear piercing scream. Mrs. Jonas was the first to come to her home. When she saw charlotte’s mother’s lifeless body she ran over to Charlotte and scooped her up. “Poor baby!” She cried. Then she ran out of the room and down the hall. “Help!” Mrs. Jonas screamed. “There is a dead mother over here! Please help!”
Charlotte started to cry. My mom is dead… I can’t go on! She thought. A couple of other people came into the room. After a few moments of crying the room was silent.
Charlotte could hear people whispering. “What about the child?” One lady said. “Does she have near-by family?” A man asked. “No, she doesn’t,” Said Mrs. Jonas. “Then she must go to an Orphanage,” a lady said. Everyone mumbled in agreement.
But charlotte did not. She did not want to live in an orphanage. That was like prison. So charlotte took a run for it. She bolted out of her house. Then out of the building. She turned down the street, and continued to run. She just kept on going. Like a speeding bullet. Then she came to stop. She was lost. But she did not care. So she just took a right then kept on running. Until she found that she was in the rich part of town. People stared at her tattered blue dress.
Charlotte timidly walk through town. Then suddenly she slipped! She has fallen into a fountain. “Miss!” She heard a girl cry. A hand reached out for charlotte. She grabbed it. When charlotte was out of the water she got a good look at the girl. She looked wealthy like everyone. But she had a different feel. And charlotte could tell the girl was Irish. What was a Irish girl doing dressed so fancily. Then a girl with short wavy hair ran up to her. “Nellie!’ She panted. “Why did you run off like that?”
“Oh, Samantha, I saw this girl slip into the fountain,” The girl called Nellie said.
“Hello, how are you?” The girl called Samantha asked charlotte.
“Not good, miss,” Charlotte said.
“Your soaking, why don’t you come to our house to dry up, and you can tell us more about yourself,” Samantha said.
“Yes, please do come,” Nellie said.
Charlotte nodded. So the three girls walked to Samantha and Nellie’s house.
“So, miss what is your name?” Nellie asked charlotte after they had arrived at Nellie and Samantha’s house. “Charlotte,” Charlotte answered.
“What are you doing at this part of town?” Samantha asked as they made their way upstairs.
“Running away, so that people wouldn’t take me to an orphanage. But I don’t think you two would understand,” Charlotte said coldly.
“You’d be surprised,” Samantha smiled. She handed charlotte a bath robe.
“huh?” Charlotte asked, as she took the robe.
“It’s a bath robe, you can put it on to keep you warm,” Samantha explained.
“No not this. What do you mean by, ‘you’d be surprised’,” Charlotte asked.
“Oh well before I lived with Samantha , I lived in a small one room apartment, and I worked in a factory,” Nellie started.
“I worked in a factory, but I got fired due to a crime I did not commit. My boss thought I was stealing shoe leather,” Charlotte said. She slipped on the robe. It was warm and soft. She wished she could have it. But she did not ask, for that would be rude.
“Well, I moved to the country to work for Samantha’s neighbor, and that is where we met,” Nellie added.
“Then I moved to New York, and Nellie stayed behind, but then her parents died,” Samantha continued the story.
“My mom died yesterday,” charlotte said sadly. Samantha gave her a hug. “My parents died too, so your not alone,” she said.
“Yeah,” Nellie said giving charlotte a hug too.
‘Any ways,” Samantha started. “Nellie went to live with her ‘evil’ uncle.”
“But he left me and my sisters behind and took all of our money and things! So we had to go live in a orphanage with a mean mistress,” Nellie added.
“But then I found her and helped her run away to here,” Samantha added.
“And then Samantha’s Uncle Gard, and her aunt Cornilia adopted me and my two little sisters,” Nellie finished.
Just as Nellie finished Bridget and Jenny bounded out of their room. The two ran over to the bookshelves but then turned around and looked at the visitor.
“Hello,” Bridget said.
“Hello,” Jenny said. The two curtsied then took their books and bounded back into their room.
Then their was a wail coming from the third room. “Oh, Elizabeth! I have forgotten to feed her!” Nellie cried. She ran into the third room. “Oh it’s okay, Elizabeth! Come now,” She crooned to the restless baby.
“Well, I must be on my way,” Charlotte said. She started to slip of the robe. “Oh no, Take the robe, it was too small on my anyways,” Samantha said. Charlotte took the robe and was on her way.
